Cambridge is famous enough to stand on its own, it's definitely not a shadow of Boston. Cambridge has its own distinct personality. It's next to Boston, separated by a wide river and connected only by bridges.
A suburb is generally a smaller residential community outside a city. Cambridge is urb, there's no Sub there.

What we commonly think of as "Boston" is actually comprised of several communities. Some, over time were "annexed" or incorporated in to the City of Boston. An example of this is Brighton which became a part of Boston in 1873. Some were not. Cambridge is a city as much as is Boston. The two are separated by the Charles River and linked by several bridges, the MBTA Red line and the MBTA Green line, with Cambridge on the north side of the river. The two are also somewhat distinct in their politics. In the 1960's and 1970's Cambridge tended to be more identified with the "counterculture". I would not really call Cambridge a "suburb". It, much like Brookline (also a separate entity), is more of a "component" of the larger metropolis.

Rebecca is right. It is so close that it would be quite understandable if somebody were to think that Cambridge City is a part of Boston. Moreover some people who travel realize that Cambridge might not register with someone in Great Britain so they just say that they are from Boston.
I love Cambridge. There are great restaurants and wonderful bookstores. I'm sure that there must be crime but, let me tell you, it's nothing compared to the crime one finds just a train ride from Cambridge. It is an extremely expensive place to rent as is, let's face it, almost everywhere in Boston as well.
It is an extremely liberal place so gay people and others can live there comfortably. It also has Harvard College and MIT so there are about a million students around to make the city come alive. It has vibrant nightclubs and it looks pretty as well.
My neighborhood of Boston looks pretty rough by comparison.
There is a lot to do and Boston is right there so Cambridge is great and I am a conservative !!!

Rebecca is wrong, ArtsiChi is right. If you went to Cambridge and called it a Boston suburb they would arrest you!! Cambridge is a completely separate city, with its own independent economy, than Boston. The two cities stare at each other across the Charles River.
A person from Cambridge would NEVER say he or she was from Boston.

Cambridge is a city right next to Boston, a very short distance away.
It is the home of Harvard University.

Cambridge is a suburb right across the river. It is still on the MBTA line - but technically a different city.
