I am attending a meeting at Fairmont Copley Square in May.
I will be by myself and without a car. What are some nice places to visit or tour that are within walking distance of Copley Square? Also is it fairly safe to walk by yourself
in Boston?

The Prudential Tower -- 3 blocks. The Boston Public Library -- on Copley Sq. Boston Common -- 5 blocks. Public Gardens -- 4 blocks, on the way to Boston Common. Newbury Street -- 2 blocks (Great shopping and interesting restaurants.) Prudential Tower -- 1 block. The area is generally safe up until about midnight or 1:00 AM or so. Watch out for the traffic, though. Bostonians are notorious drivers and won't stop for their grandmother in a crosswalk. Out-of-towners are a favorite target. (Sadly, that's not a joke. Watch out!)

Also, there's a 'T' subway stop at Copley Sq. You can hit anything in the city quickly and cheaply. Take the Green Line two stops uptown (Riverside, Cleveland Circle, or Boston College) to Kenmore Square. It's about 5 blocks to Fenway Park. Tickets are impossible and very expensive but they have hourly tours except during games. (Watch out for pick-pockets on the T. Otherwise it's safe. It's packed during rush-hour.)

BTW, the 'o' in Copley is short. It's pronounced "Cop-Lee", not "Cope-Lee". You'll be chastised frequently if you mispronounce it.

Check out the following links. http://www.mbta.com/ will give you the schedules and routes for the MBTA (mass bay transit authority). http://www.wizeguides.com/wizeguides/... will show you the stops for the subway and has a listing of sites and attractions. The latter is a great interactive site.

I lived in Boston for a few years, and I had a couple of incidents on the T, but then again I went places that I shouldn't have, and I made the mistake of wearing a gold chain on the subway, and carrying a clutch purse. Just pay attention, and if you plan to be out late, take a taxi versus the subway. Just my experience.
